An all white room is probably one of the most mind-numbing spaces that one can find themselves in. This is because humans are programmed to look for color in spaces. Metaphorically, humans look for color in spaces, places, things and ultimately — humans look for color in their own lives too.

White is often a color that symbolizes peace, clarity, serenity and even tranquility. It is a color that one might even say brings peace of mind. And just like our lives, what’s picture perfect and something we think we want for ourselves might be far from what we actually need. What we think we want from our lives and to do with them is often influenced by many external factors. External factors that are able to sell the idea of white being the color we find to bring us peace of mind. And when that doesn’t materialize, we find our minds numb. Due to a lack of color in our lives- our seemingly perfect lives.

Often times the mind-numbing begins the minute we accept what external factors believe what our lives should be. That is when we begin to try and achieve a picture perfect life that we believe to be what it is we want. That is when some of us begin to paint our rooms all white. As we’re painting, we fail along the way. The shades of white in the room aren’t the same. We mistaken the failure for defeat, when in fact, the failure has brought a little bit of color into our lives. When we fail again, we become accustomed to the pain and it eventually transcends into a feeling of nothingness. And once the room is complete, we’ve gone crazy. We have achieved an all white room that we so seemingly thought we desired and it is incredibly mind-numbing to realize that it brings us a feeling of nothingness. Both failure and success do nothing except leave our lives bleak. We’ve trapped ourselves into a life of complete nothingness of an abyss. And like a complete white room, it drives us crazy.

Depression. Feelings of severe despondency and dejection. Never let the world write your story for you. And in order to do what’s best for you, you have to first know what it is that’s best for you. And it’s okay to get it wrong a couple of times, that brings color into your life. Just never settle for what doesn’t speak to your spirit.
